all right we'll go ahead and get started here when I'm special lessons be tomorrow is September 11th and so in honor of September 11th our lesson today is going to be dedicated to Patriot's Day on September 11th 2001 national holiday was created to commemorates September 11th called Patriots Day do that in fact of c n n CNN has dedicates episode to September 11 some things freezing up I'm going to have to go back out and bring up the CNN Student News with me a chance to do that and those are just joining us loses go back real quick grab a special lesson today Patriots Day tomorrow September 11th 2021 would be 20 years tomorrow that the United States was attacked the worst terrorist attack on American soil more lives lost that day than even the surprise attack by the Japanese Pearl Harbor and so devastating day in American history and those that live through it and those that lost loved ones we'll always have that with them for the rest of their lives been so long thing doesn't want to work here let's go back to what I have to say in the car with slides mobile. All right see you again this just and you were looking at obviously a very disturbing live shot there that is the World Trade Center and we have unconfirmed reports this morning that a plane has crashed into one of the towers. There are no words for it appears that something he the Pentagon on the outside of the fifth quarter we have a report now that a large plane crash this morning north of the Somerset County Airport which is in Western Pennsylvania don't start it at 8:45 on a clear tube morning we had a live camera up on what looks like a smoking slash across one of the World Trade Center towers a passenger plane had flown into it and I remember some of us here at CNN thinking this was some sort of freak event then a second plane flew into the tower that was at 9:03 a.m. and at that point there was this deepening dread in everyone something was wrong in a way we never seen before airports Bridges tunnels and New York and New Jersey shut down within 30 minutes President George Bush said we were under an apparent terrorist attack and minutes after that every airport in the country was closed that had never happened before it wasn't over though at 9:43 a.m. a third passenger jet crash into the Pentagon smoke rolled up from that part of that huge building all eyes and many cameras were on that and the two burning Towers in New York and is all of us watched it 10:05 one of those Towers gave way where we smoking the top part crushing the rest of it and sending up debris in boiling grey clouds 5 minutes later part of the Pentagon collapsed in 1/4 hijack jet crashed in a rural part of Pennsylvania the White House United Nations the state and Justice Department World Bank all evacuated America bound Atlantic flights were rerouted to Canada and the second Trade Center Tower came down at 10:28 so many closings evacuations shutdowns stop for emergency response teams the heroes of 9/11 the country virtually stopped what it was doing and gathered around TV screens the president appeared just after 1 p.m. and asked Americans to pray there wasn't much else we could do destruction was more or less done around 10:30 it was less than two hours from the first crash that the change and inflicted was in measurable more Americans were killed on September 11th 2001 been on the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 41 and when President Bush address the nation that night at 8:30 is tone was one of sympathy resolved and warning to anyone who'd planned or support of the attacks we will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these and those who Harbor them in the difficult days that followed we learned that the al-Qaeda terrorist group led by Osama Bin Laden was responsible for all of this and America's attention and anger turned to Afghanistan Taliban leaders were give Al Qaeda a safe place to live and operate this Saturday will Mark exactly twenty years since those terrorist attacks were carried out and the number of events are being planned Across America to remember the two thousand nine hundred and 7 lives that were lost in the days immediately following the attacks President George W bush declared September 14th as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the victims and after the US government established the Patriot Holiday Inn the sign of unity seen during that time no members of Congress voted against that bill Patriot day has been observed every September 11th since 2002 this year there will be live TV coverage of Memorial ceremonies moments of Silence will be observed prayer services and commemorative events will be held across the United States and readings will be made naming the thousands of victims including the hundreds of firefighters and police officers Port Authority officers and other emergency officials who lost their lives while trying to save others special events are being planned at the three sites where the hijacked planes were crashed Ground Zero in New York City the Pentagon in Arlington Virginia in the field outside Shanksville Pennsylvania Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden are planning to attend these three ceremonies and what we don't know yet if the president is scheduled to speak at one or more of these events and address from former President George W bush has been planned in Shanksville where United 93 was crashed 20 years ago that morning in 2001 President Bush was visiting an elementary school he was in a second grade classroom when he was told the nation was under attack almost two decades later CNN Victor spell visited that school in Sarasota Florida and he spoke to the teacher and some of the students who were with the president on that historic and horrific day here are their memories what do you do in that moment I sprayed and I asked why why and how I really need to let me know what was going on Leasing we knew his Daniels as loving caring totally different take from from our teachers kind of jarring never seen her like this how long was your moment how to get back to my kids so I didn't want them to think that they had done something wrong so I had to let them know it was not their fault something in the way that you presented a test like allowed me to understand like the human side of it that I am not the most important person right now like he's got something he has to do people are hurting he has to leave and that's okay and it's not our fault and I think after that that's when you know they caught on the TV for us does Americans who are looking at these home riffic pictures and then it all came together like I'd grass how serious it was I think myself maybe I just didn't stop it was like a movie or something it didn't look real the memory of it might fluctuate a little after I came out of the room I told them what happened the pictures and images that they saw they might have seen them in that door was open but the TV never came in here I was very careful about how expose them to and what I said to them hey this is the story of it's so few people have heard in part because they never all been together to tell this story those of the students while they're 27 years old now and their teacher mrs. Daniel those who were with President Bush on that morning Amy Booker I in Sarasota and other president was coming this was started this started as a day that was one to celebrate the present was coming to congratulate them for improving their reading scores they eat late I will waiting for someone never seen a president in person obviously one little girl put her hand over a heart that Chantal she thought about him much like the the flag and pledging Allegiance another boy talked about that he expected the king to walk in when you walked in they say the President Bush was war they read a book The Pet Goat that they all remember the title to the title of and then Andy card walked in and whispered 11 words into the president's ear a second plane has hit the second tower America is under attack back and visit Daniel says the president left her that he was sitting there but he was somewhere else and then it came back and then got up and walked away and she had to decide in that moment what to tell her babies as she called them about that moment you want to make sure that they knew it was not their fault 20 years later they have the context of time to understand their place in this historic day they don't really like to talk about it often because they know that so many other people lost something that day they don't want the notoriety but they know that they have to be part of the history of that day to share that perspective and a powerful perspective it is this will conclude our special coverage of the 20th anniversary of the sea April 11th 2001 terrorist attacks thank you for watching and if there's a tribute or Memorial like this taking place in your community and commemoration of September 11th it is a sight to see Jesus for CNN 10 Caso tribute from CNN Student News there you go back to my PowerPoint here all right so we just watched CNN Student News there and some of the images are always being trying to do mines and where the trade Towers once stood course they have is reflecting pools of CNN show a picture of it when they have those names on the little metal thing they basically have people's names on this metal Lord shoes box the same size as what the Twin Towers were in all around that tub metal for are the names of the victims at that died at the World Trade Center in an awesome First Responders policeman policeman at died as well as the firefighters that died and each year on September 11th they have some lights that reflect up to show where the Trade Center wants to it buildings were you knew you were in New York City we saw Twin Towers there featuring a lot of hit movies over the years of their existence and so it's like the Twin Towers worse or like a city-within-a-city a lot of notoriety and the little girl that you talk to him after school when President Bush was reading a story to them and when they saw the cover and she said it was the same feelings I had I was in my first block class teaching school in Georgia and the Matthews came and knocked on my door she said TV in our class was good team in their classroom that's cool and I can see the North Tower, I thought maybe it was something again I felt like they were trying to promote a movie or something and then turn on 903 Saw II plane flying to the next building I was like oh my God and then the other one playing at credit shank fields Pennsylvania is actually meant for Washington DC more likely the cap of a plant cell short of its Target plane is all the other planes took off on time but there was a time delay for Flight 93 and so I think because the time to lay it and make it to its dark Craftsman fuel because some of the people on board the plane tried to take over the plane but they weren't they are unsuccessful in the crash and feel too so all right so what do you guys know about September 11th 2001 I guess since you guys are freshman mostly so obviously it's just weird saying that you guys went around and so you'll I guess you will one day you'll have to give you when you're my age other talk talk about the people that she knew unfortunately every generation has something traumatic I guess you guys can talk about the pandemic you knew what that was like cuz you live through that but and some yogurt people and you'll be. Always remember where they were and what they were doing when President Kennedy was assassinated back in 1963 and so same with 2001 Central of 2020 do you have to be able to serve your day I can remember the classroom what happened at the you say I'm always early to work that day I was on time and so it's almost like something extra memory like like I said the people that lost family members that they lost friends loved ones do for them that's something that will be with him for the rest of their lives and sure they moved on but a part of them. With those people that day and then of course those that survive are a lot of people that survived in the Trade Center and the Pentagon. but they survived and that's something that we go again this isn't on September 11th 2001 in Iraq gift troops in Iraq still but a rat the bulk of the fighting took place between 2003 to 2013 since 2013 and most quiet with the exception of US troops but other than that the most US troops are still looking threats and we have drones now to go out Miss Mulatto drone strikes throughout the world terrorism and I think they will be more because some of these people still have his ideology get away from that we're thinking just tend to not take religion twist religion and happy because really when you look at religions religions really are about whether it's Christianity Judaism can you whatever religion about doing good and helping you better and yourself and so I just want to stand how people in twist and twist and decorate and know that gift wrap it looks like a nice Christmas gift on the outs but it's nothing but rotten meat and rotten Dead 2 Chain whatever when the inside because you can't have hate and call that religion but some people with their minds are warped and so they take rotten dead rotten dead flesh wrap it up a nice Christmas Eve going outside looks like I'm fighting for Allah but hate is hate no matter what you do with it and that is not religion that is not bettering yourself and I'm certainly some people buy into this son this message of us hating it so I think it we can use soft power and money just talked to people influence creating jobs you can get some people that with you and then people unfortunately but I think it's a small minority some people unfortunately have to catch him in the act and probably get you with the Drone strike I like what we did because they were killed in Afghanistan in the last couple days with drawing find some other people and it's Mom. Unfortunately two civilians getting the way in to get hit but I think these guys are cowards because they're so old and blowing themselves up but then they hide among civilians and so unfortunately civilians get hit because you were trying to take out the bad guys and so to me that's why don't you come out in the open while you have to hide among the innocent people she's so brave and talked documentary memory box Echoes of 911 co-produced by nbcnews Studios which is very simple and his nature the very old and forward-thinking and it's in tainted space to people they close the door and they said what they wants to know The Producers reached out to more than 150 people who made these recordings and ask them to speak again my friend Lindsay Moore house including Lisa napping my best friend from school was in the second tower now Lisa rig mother-of-four I wonder if it will help them one day like when they lose somebody who they love they will be able to remember that grieve because you can also live your life and you can love your life and you can be happy to being recorded did it in some way just feel private enough to kind of let some stuff out that you weren't. but otherwise it felt really private and safe it felt like I was alone with my thoughts and it felt good to talk because I wasn't talking to people because it was too hard and it is still songs that come on in the radio that just like I have to pull over and and just take a moment because she loved music so much and she loved dancing and there is some pain in there that's really close to the surface even though she just turned twenty-four she's like Frozen in time so her death was and Still Remains really a really challenging topic for me here's to the tragedy that day but the emotions fear shock and wasp are all part of The Human Experience the producer say that is what makes these people stories relatable and even hopeful I think this is a film about resilience and how we as humans find ways to cope with our troll Mountain coat for the green food move through tragedy and even though the most romantic thing cuz it happened there is a way to get through it you know I'll tell you it's an intense thing to wash it was very emotional for me to wash the what was really great about it as you get the full spectrum of experience what's not it's also Witnesses and you get all these different best friend in Tower 2 all the debris falling when the guys might just grab me and he's like let's go let's get out of here but then it dawned on me that my friend Lindsay Morehouse one of my best friends when school was in tower on the 89th floor she's got to be okay I was just be okay because there's no anything bad could ever happen to anybody why no stupidly I left my cell phone on my desk and so why didn't know how to get in touch with her I guess maybe now any news on my chest in a little more willing to talk about things and Two-Face what happened and come to terms with Lindsay's death but I just can't get over the fact that she's gone because it's just it's too much to think about and what happened at days and still too much for me to think about so yeah my name is Lisa red it's Tuesday April 27th 2021 33 l talking about everything that's happened and changed since then and then also specifically the experience of recording that video and this dude has directors David Belton joins us now. this is such a powerful project I wanted to talk to you about what some of these Witnesses said today but go back to the start of the origin what was the idea behind this plywood box where people were invited to talk about what they saw on 9/11 will be artists who created the Box 20 years ago and I think she had seen the way that the attacks shrimp place where he born a carnival having that whole story's excluded from the media people need a safe space to be able to tell that story so she created the spokes so she gave people can you try to control a people flocked I mean people so David what was the process now as you sought to revisit some of their stories and get some respective two decades later of wars that followed a new presidencies that followed of lives completely changed how did you track them down and what was their reluctance in some cases or openness to talk about this again when was that people that box mobile listen already took time to think about what they were saying was that I wanted to do more than just simply say what has happened to them Express a feeling from the story that the stories that has lots of people gave you that send stove something else going on the base of a Greece that's that probably will still come already get to grips with the trauma we realize that the way to get through people were struggling to express finding ways to express the emotional experience but I volunteered at Ground Zero or someone who work at the Pentagon who was saved by a colleague or a father who lost his wife but the children survived in the daycare center can you talk about the wide range of participants I mean you said it I mean that's right that it was so difficult to have a favorite like you have a favorite. Special special people Aaron's in a way they cost themselves it wasn't us that we were looking for a particular kind of person to tell a particular kind of story once you stopped to hear that story box became a cell you just thought an amazing person you are and we have another clip this is Elizabeth Dragon Burger whose daughter was just an infant when this happened to take a look I thought we should just maybe start walking away from them because when you're really close to your due date no and then my dad going to show her and the baby this is her noun and the baby now and later 20 years later 20 years later David the ripple effect of memories so vivid in these clips were showing from 535 people who initially walked into the memory box to what did you just say you have traps 30 or 32 people making the Final Cut and it raises the question at least in my mind about this ripple effect the numbers of people who especially in the metropolitan New York and Washington area in Pennsylvania number of the day every day from a cloud formation to a song on the radio or the visual memory of a child who is now a young adult it's incredible really when you think about it absolutely I like that was something that we here in person because we were making the film in London that we have to be very conscious that people Stevens was still rule on Fairfax did you say all Elizabeth Elizabeth New York and would dealing with the after-effects because everybody has a story and I think in a way well in The Wolf Among Us you could get the events that you could find routes through the trauma and the grease that you were experiencing tell me what the thing that has and realized it ways to get through the grief and the Truman and Teresa notary open at jewelry stores what were they like these people that you interested what's next sit next to me I just wanted to say thuja make the song with them okay that's what's up there that's what you get back. all right here Tennessee Lottery essential question see what cities were attacked on September 11th 2001 so obviously no New York City what was another city that was attacked anybody divisor will the other City attack was the Pentagon outside of Washington DC technically pentagon's next alexandrian Arlington area I hear you I was going okay I'm in the other plane crashed near Shanksville Pennsylvania really crack on the country it was meant for Washington DC as well so basically New York City and Washington DC how many planes were hijacked on day in Birmingham they were hijacked the crash that did four four planes one for each of the Trade Center towers one for the Pentagon and one was actually meant for the Capitol Building or white White House and that's the one that crashed in Pennsylvania so 404 Plains how many total hijackers took over planes that fateful day they're supposed to be five on each plane transports would be 20 - 1 they believe that zacarias moussaoui a guy that caught several months before the Trade Center attack happened between object he is one of the many different evidences and dots that our government failed to connect and field to share intelligence and open for coordinating work with each other things can be stopped I remember back in 2011 for the New Millennium when it was going from the 20th century to 21st century on December 31st 1999 lease in Washington state stop some guy who's going to do some suicide bombing or some like that up in Washington and that's because of strong intelligence and being a mess with me I think I reconnected the this could have been avoided the first biggest. Should have been in 1993 when the Trade Center was attacked before you guys was that was long because born but I remember I was in college when it happened the first first time trades by some terrorist truck bomb underneath one of the one you would fall into the other Trade Center and so armor 99th Street reading the paper to Monday the guys are behind it they flew the guys are behind and they swing by Seether still standing and so you know it was a 99 3 and soul my mind when zoomed to hit resume back on September 11th oh my gosh they finish the job because I think the first time in 1993 that should have been a big wake-up call and wish me happy same here to be at the bombing in Oklahoma City near the bombing of the USS Cole attack so our present was busy at peak in Canada or somewhere overseas he had missile batteries around where he was visiting the she died any kind of incoming plane so just a lot of little things like that where we failed to connect the dots and Court September 11th woke us up and then for someone when people look back at it look back at not connecting the dots and look back at the chosen not you different agencies not sharing intelligence with each other working together and so that's why Homeland Security his truck was hit first and at what time if you're watching the video they said 8:45 the North Tower was struck by United Fleet 9 flight 75 that was a flight to I'm sorry my bad it was American Airlines flight 11s light and it originated in Boston was going to California hijackers took over it and they flew into the North Tower nails at 8:45 the next plane was a United Airlines flight 175 that plane also to go from Boston to was also head for California projects to go over there and then 903 the second power - 9 3937 another American Airlines flight hit the Pentagon and then United Airlines flight number 93 that was meant for the capital I was crashed in the field Pennsylvania the passengers because five is from dead but I'm for okay so the next question freeze I just said the answer that one which flight missed its Target I just said it cuz I was just mentioning this man attention is the last one crashed in Pennsylvania I know no answer I just wait. what's the crash into the Pentagon was it was an American Airlines that crashed in Pennsylvania this is Turkey who was the president when those terrorist attacks per who was president United States when they took place CNN student news showed him he said there we will make no distinction between the terrorists and those who Harbor them Republican you're watching CNN Student News broadcast his father was president in the 20th century he's named after his father GB TV his father was a vice Ronald Reagan's vice president George what written by George real George Bush George W Bush George W bush 90s spot it was George Bush was the Vice President Ronald Reagan and then got his own turn Okay and then it says how did life and soul has been a way of life for you who won the biggest waves that's changed besides the fact that we lost our innocence and and this was the first attack on the twentieth century Hawaii Hawaii actually take the time ticket to have to check your bags and they have to know and so that you all these strange things now because I'm trying to read out it's so interesting to me because they have the terrorists being wanted by police that's the irony of those hijackers of plane they have one camera being checked by the police and they still got through with some box cutters and fake bombs so we have to be ever Vigilant now and support got a pretty good job and I think as long as we continue the terrorists of up can I drink plain soda when terrorists hijacked the truck trucks killing dozens of people entering the mini more of course now they probably planned on that and so a couple of people driven cars and sidewalk cafes so every time something now they're kind of shutting down there really watching people lot more now it's hard to get guns in Europe and Spain of Subway France concert they had some concerts concert in several areas in which will I be serious we have to be pretty busy these countries in Europe have been pretty busy and try to shut some of those things down so Africa people learn and so we make it harder the next time for these people to try to do things like that it's hard because we have a lot of people they smile to come in they want to create Carnage and then flipped a lot of pain to get people ultimately it's going to be a sealed weapon and so like I said we have to try to find a way to you soft power and try to get people out of his mindset try to teach people the right way try to teach people that religion is not something that's about 18 destroying and if you hate to destroy then don't try to use religion to justify your hate and your politics and unfortunately too many people try to use religion to justify their hate and doing bad things to in this war and this war could be in our neighborhood to never know and so anytime you see something or say something don't have this attitude not snitching because we're not careful what happened on September happen again in fact there were a couple times with things have been foiled a terrorist attack in New York City I think we're in Times Square they got to put a bomb in someone it was a bomb in his head that bomb going off of really caused a lot of Destruction killed a lot of people and so thank God that was foiled so I think the biggest thing is really the biggest structure has been ourselves a lot of world shootings using automatic weapons walking into schools on School Street Theatre concerts so think sometimes violence weather for Norden seek you find ways to reduce 5 V better ways to resolve their situations and not to use violence or any questions about Patriots Day Patriot Day again you guys are born into pictures they all you've known as Patriots Day September 11th and so September 11th for a lot of people means different things it's like I was watching on the news where for one couple her husband died on September 11th and September 11th is a wedding at work anniversary they got married in September or September 11th at people's 1998 so they were celebrating their gums unfortunately was a positive anniversary for this one lady has been done for last
