RSAE Students Share the Gift of Compassion This Christmas Season

This Christmas season, students from Ms. Wanda Woodberry‑Murphy and Ms. Bernadette Jones’ class at Ridgeland Secondary Academy of Excellence (RSAE) embodied the true spirit of giving through a heartfelt service‑learning project at the Robertville Lowcountry Senior Center in Robertville, SC.

On Friday, December 12, 2025, the students brought holiday cheer by presenting gifts, handmade cards, and sharing joyful songs and poems with senior residents. In preparation for the visit, students collaborated for weeks to design personalized holiday cards and carefully wrap small gifts. Their efforts reflected not only creativity but also compassion and thoughtfulness.

During the event, students greeted residents with warm smiles, handshakes, and festive cheer. They personally delivered cards and gifts, taking time to listen and connect with the seniors. The highlight of the day was a spirited musical performance, where RSAE students, staff, and senior residents joined together in singing classic Christmas carols—filling the room with laughter, joy, and community spirit.

For the seniors, the visit offered meaningful social interaction and reminded them that they are valued and remembered during the holiday season. For the students, it was an opportunity to build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and take pride in serving their community.

Ms. Woodberry reflected: “The project showed that our students can make a real difference in someone’s life. They learned that service is not just about giving items, but about sharing kindness, time, and joy. This was a powerful example of inclusion, empathy, and community connection. It reinforced the idea that everyone, regardless of age or ability, has something valuable to give.”

As RSAE students and staff departed, they carried with them the most meaningful gift of all—the joy of knowing they had brightened the holidays for others.
