Access Testing ESOL Program and Access Testing Show Transcript hello Jasper County we are back with an update from our esol program regarding our upcoming access testing for Ells so my name is Don fur I am the district multilingual and gifted and talented coordinator the update will bring you first is regarding the esol program which is nothing new the first detail we have is how do we identify our ml students so our students used to be identified as English language Learners which the state has now identified our students as multilingual Learners as we know we have many languages coming into our districts across the state and across the United States so the first step that our families come in doing is filling out a home language survey and this is a survey that is filled out by our parents and Guardians to identify what our students primarily speak whether it is a language they speak at home it is whether they communicate with their friends and family if it is a language other than English is identified so once that is identified our students go through what we call a screening process and through the screening process there is a level that comes with that screening which I I will identify later so these students are placed in what we call service models it could be anywhere from a class period model I'll push or pull out Model A Coe model consultative dual immersion or sheltered content models once students successfully go through these models they are considered monitored students receive linguistic support in 4 domain chains of reading listening writing and speaking so what do these levels mean once they're screened students will level in considering a level 1 of entering all the way up to level 6 reaching even though they don't have to get all the way up to a level 6 reaching these are the levels that they can be identified through screening or taking access for LS the different types of service models depend on these levels that they're screened through so students in levels 1 through 3 and our secondary high school and middle schools will receive a class period And this is where they will attend a class during 1 of the class block periods other classes are pushing or pull out models the push and model is exactly what it sounds like the ml or esol teacher will literally push into that classroom where the ml students will receive their linguistic um service models alongside the general education teacher Apollo is the opposite where the ml teacher will pull the student out they will small group differentiation linguistic service models teaching is where the ml esol teacher Works directly alongside the gened teacher and they will lesson plan and co- teach those small group differentiation service models together sheltered content model is 1 of the newest models that we provide here at Jasper County School District last year we had 13 teachers received their um esol certification through USC Aiken those teachers are now at the point where they can provide those s o l linguistic service models directly inside their gen Ed classroom so typically what you're looking for is a student who's coming in receiving service models is they'll receive those Services anywhere from 4 to 5 years while we receiving these services our goal is for them to level out receive their linguistic acquisition along those 4 to 5 years and then they will become what we call monitored so for another 4 years we will still monitor along side that general education teacher to make sure there's not a linguistic acquisition barrier preventing our our students from becoming um AC any academic growth for them so in order to pass this access tests that we have coming up which I will give details about is a student needs to receive a 4.4 overall composite score so as before I talked about levels of 1 through 6 so a student does not have to receive a 6 in order to exit the program so an overall compos that score 4.4 but in those 4 domains of listening Reading Writing and speaking they also need to receive a 4.0 in all of those so 4.4 and then a 4.0 and all 4 domains will exit a student out of receiving service models in the program that will then push them into what we call the monitoring stage of a service model and they will receive a monitoring service for 4 years alongside the general education teacher to make sure there's not a linguistic barrier for our students to have academic success so the question comes is my student have to receive esol or be part of the esol program and that answer is no a parent can wave their child to not receive Services however if a child is screened inside those levels of 1 through 6 and has not passed the state access test they do have to be tested annually until they pass out of that test with a 4.4 and 4.0 and 4 domains to become monitored so this brings us to our testing season of access for L's 2024 so our testing window begins Monday January 22nd and will close on March 8th for Access for LS we do not have a makeup window it is 1 window of January 22nd through March 8th at this time we will pull our students who are identified as multilingual and have not passed access yet they will be tested in the 4 domains that have been identified before as listening Reading Writing and speaking he'll be tested and grouped first and listening and reading we group our students in 15 students or less to keep our students focused on those areas so when listening and reading what happens first is our students test and listening and reading and then the system tears our students so that they are regrouped again for writing and speaking our writing is also a small group of 15 or less but our speaking is even and smaller so that our students can focus on our articulation and giving descriptions as much as they can and groups of 5 or less so I want to thank you for this time the severe important tests for our multilingual students to take and to focus on taking we have shared links with our esol program team and we have shared links with our gened team regarding what is this test look like can I take practice sample items what can I take a test demo all of those links have been shared and are also shared on our websites as well if you as parents or community members want to take a look at what this test looks like I want to thank you for joining us today if you ever have any questions for for me please do not hesitate to send me an email as it is located in that second box or you can shoot me a phone call right there in my extension is 1406
