Boykin shared his negative experiences as a student who struggled academically, socially, mentally, and emotionally in elementary, middle, and high school. He encouraged the students by sharing about being a failing student but still managed to receive his GED, complete undergraduate school, receive two graduate school degrees, and earn his Ph. D.
RHHS students were thoroughly engaged in his session. Students interacted by asking questions and provided input to scenarios Boykin presented to them.
Boykin also conducted a professional development session with RHHS educators and district employees. The PD session was very informative. Boykin shared personal experiences with staff, to help understand the stress and struggle of a failing student. He provided helpful information and resources for the staff members to use in their daily interactions with students, parents, and administrators.
After hearing Boykin speak at a conference, RHHS Principal Karen Parker Ed.D. immediately realized that Jasper County needed to hear his motivational speech. My staff members were very receptive; a few stated that it was the best professional development that they have ever attended! I think that the faculty view our students with a different set of lens and intend to work harder to build positive relationships and meeting the needs of all of our students" said Parker.
Boykin’s session emphasized the importance of being an effective educator, with hopes to show educators how their positive influence can change a student’s from failure to a success!
