the first to come up when you search for Italian Renaissance if you haven't done that go watch it I'll wait but if you have watched it okay we're used to hearing about all these Italians and sculptures and paintings of naked people and all of that kind of stuff well what makes the northern Renaissance different than the Italian Renaissance and what did they have in common thanks a j your question hopefully you're watching and so first of all let's go ahead and contrast now the northern Renaissance is more Christian than the Italian Renaissance keep in mind that the Italian Renaissance champions it's more of a moron the Christian aspect and then while the Italian Renaissance was about individualism you see that the northern Renaissance humanists are more concerned about broad social reforms that can happen how can we use humanism not only to better cell but also to an act change in society now as far as what they have in common we still have the emphasis on the classic works of Greek Roman and biblical literature going to be something that all humans have in common no matter what their philosophy and speaking of the humanistic for your baby Euro exam or your Western Civ test. You're most likely to encounter these two humans BFFs here Thomas More I had both of them pick one and Erasmus okay Thomas More from England or Rasmus from the Netherlands first of all let's look at Thomas More who was the chancellor to Henry the 8th as a classical scholar also with margarine the Reformation he opposed to Henry's church reform and Henry I had him executed for that that's you you don't mess with Henry okay not only if you're not one of his wives but also if you want to just friends doesn't matter who you are and Thomas More is most famous cause for purposes of baby grow is the author of utopia and Utopia is really part of this revival of Plato remember Aristotle how to floss for the Middle Ages on the humanists are very attached to Plato's works the foremost among Plato's worse being the Republic and the ideal State we can come up with the perfect what would it be like in Plato gets rid of the family he gets rid of Thomas Moore is still going to be contemplating this GF of the ideal state if we could put together the perfect Society what would it look like and so this book Utopia which is no place is kind of imitation of Plato of course you see a lot Catholic principle Thomas More's not going to break up the Family Guy because that's a a Catholic unit there will be no distinctions in clothing except for distinctions between men and women who keep in mind more is not quite as radical setting up a very up socialist system by comparison I Utopia has a lot of social criticism as far as you know the Law & Order aspect of the time where somebody stealing bread hang up well Thomas More what are you doing to solve these social problems just hanging someone for stealing bread that doesn't get rid of poverty so how do we get rid of poverty and the idea is that if we all all work together and you didn't have these big distinction between British and 4 then maybe there would be a lot more to go around let's move on to Erasmus his BFF I got you the most for writing the praise of folly which is imitating classical writers because in the praise of folly Folly is actually a person and just like you do love the ancient saw the Greeks and the Romans they hatch they had love personify they have the music so I can go if you're riding you would pray to the muses so you get inspired and so Follies listen here and is going places you know it 1.28 dispute. following the text and of course Erasmus is sort of soul the seeds for the Protestant Reformation by looking in the Bible and using this as a measuring stick for figuring out is the church doing what it's supposed to do and one thing no sorry and I'm going to show you a few pictures here he notes Peter's patrimony yeah we talked about before another video about how Peter is the First bishop of Rome and by tradition all of the Pope's have this Authority passed down and so what is Peter's patrimony of course the current Pope says that I sit on the chair of St Peter St Pete and so the Pope's they kind of see themselves looking something like this here is a painting by Fasco Fernandez from Portugal and as you can see here is Saint Peter who will really looks like he's got a lot of riches he's got this nice throne with little carvings on it and he's got a nice robe he's got his nice printed by keep in mind the printing press it just came out at this time so they're Saint Peter with his printing press Bible and he looks very well being of course all right we look at the background and there is a fisherman so okay let's love that be kind of gloss over it looks back in the Bible and he sees the apostles simple fisherman they weren't rich you did so is the Bishops of the church seek to imitate the apostles then why not something more like this I hear is an icon of Saint Peter from Saint Catherine's Monastery in the sixth Century notice that this Peter is breast much more simply this Peter is holding a cross and nails to symbolize a suffering death this Peter is not wealthy this is a Peter who is much more biblical the Peter who appears the New Testament the classical texts and so a Rasmus looks at the classics and he says way when I read the classics I see this guy not this guy this not this one church I see this guy so if the Bishops want to imitate the church then maybe they should give up some of their well maybe they should suffer a little bit more so although the praise of folly imitates Riders by personifying Falling it's value for European history students is mostly in the social criticism of the Catholic church that are Rasmus is taking shots as a loyal Catholic Reformation the fact that he has disagreements with Luther about free will this is something as a humanist and a Catholic or Rasmus finds critical be believed in the human will which Martin Luther and so although he is criticizing the church from the inside we do see some of this social criticism some of this humanism that is going to leave toward the Reformation and speaking of humanism one of Erasmus is projects was to create a Greek New Testament now keep in mind that Greek was the original language but the official Latin Vulgate of course written in the whereas Erasmus humanist he wants to see some real ladder Erasmus wrote when he was working on this it is only fair that Paul should address the Romans in somewhat better lap Greek edition of the New Testament gather any consult these group texts these are original text okay that is important original text to the humanists very very important so once he consults the original tags then he decides I'm going to polish up the in Erasmus so I like alright let's look at the Renaissance versus the northern Renaissance he can go into a bit more detail about that what I touched on in the PowerPoint slides hey their students I'm going to talk to you a little bit now about the Italian versus the northern Renaissance I'm going to cast on this one because this is less of a content-oriented lecture and more of a tutorial for those of you who don't know I'll for online tutoring on my website and specifically I'll be offering this year on 8-month riding you can click here for more information on that and what we're going to look at in this sort of tutorial segment is comparison which is one of the four thinking skills that could come up on your leq your long as they if you are taking APUSH AP Euro or AP world compared the Italian Renaissance and the northern Renaissance and in comparing remember that we need to look at the differences and the similarities now this is where a lot of people lose points on an essay because when they hear compare they just think contrast they think differences so the first thing that's very important is that you were keeping in mind differences and similarities got similarities underlined here because a lot of times the differences are much easier to emphasize in the similarities but we need to make sure that we do both now first of all there is the Italian Renaissance that is typically surprised as individualistic and secular and then there's the northern Renaissance that is characterized as more socially oriented and Christian in comparison to the Italian Renaissance so when we're setting up our essay 4 long essay question what we have to do here this is a prewriting setup that I'm going to be recommending to my students this year and will be working on in the eight-month riding Clinic the Italian Renaissance will need something here a contrasting character is for a few characteristics and supporting evidence and then over here we will need contrasting characteristics and supporting evidence for the northern Renaissance so for everything in the Italian Renaissance column there needs to be a Counterpoint in the northern Renaissance, and then after we do that we need to find something they have in common it doesn't have to be great but it needs to be something that comparison and contrasting needs to happen so let's think about how we would do how we would create an argument comparing the Italian Renaissance and the northern Renaissance now what I'll do here is I'd like to start off with my evidence so you need at least two pieces of evidence to get the first evidence point order to do that I think the best way to compare the Italian Renaissance and the northern Renaissance would be to take Machiavelli's The Prince and put it up against Thomas More's Utopia so we have one of the classic works of the Italian Renaissance and another of the North Renaissance first of all Machiavelli's the prince is about how to Be an Effective leader it is individualistic it is about how to improve yourself as an individual who is seeking to acquire power whereas Thomas More is focusing more on the ideal society and this goes along with the tendency of northern Renaissance humanists to focus on social reform now when you look at Machiavelli it is better to be feared than loved The end justifies the means this is a secular approach this is not Christian you can't imagine The Sermon on the Mount blessed are those who are feared for they will get what they want I would love to write a Sherman on the mount according to Machiavelli one of these days I might get to it if you ever work on it want to send it to me if you get there first let me know now when you go to Thomas More's Utopia you see the abolition of property and then this idea wealth corrupts people now this is an idea that is very prominent in Christianity and especially when you look at Catholic theology in particular you'll see where you do Catholic clergy Take a Bow poverty Chastity and obedience now the extent to which they were keeping those valves during the Renaissance is Up For Debate but Thomas Moore is writing from an obviously Catholic Christian Perspective so when you look at these two works you can use them both as evidence to support the characterization of the Italian Renaissance As more secular and individualistic and the characterization of the northern Renaissance As more Christian and more socially or and it's so you know you're really kind of throwing this all together that the evidence is supporting a point now what about for what they have in common well you might think this would be difficult but then again it's very easy because when it comes down to it.
