After the American victory over the British Empire, our nation was governed by the Articles of Confederation. But after a few years and Shay's Rebellion, many leaders in the new nation knew that a stronger central was essential; otherwise, the country would fall apart. Hence, the 1787 Constitutional Convention created a new and lasting document that still is the supreme law of the land today.

Prince welcome to come out today August 31st I'm going to be attending my son-in-law's Army graduation from Advanced Training at Fort Gordon Augusta Georgia and so he's moving on to the next phase of his life I'm in ROTC and so I'm just there to support him and I should be back tomorrow God willing and recording Institute continue looking at the topic that we are we're looking at the early American Republic after we won our independence from Great Britain and so we can look at the early years for public we talked about the Articles better if you did a little bit of that last week by the way to with with the with the new Republic it wasn't easy getting started and so you know the Hallmark of our country his people willing to put aside their ego and work through their differences and no point in human history have two human beings greed wanted to know everything I think it's just human nature since humans have been on the earth now and as long as humans are on this Earth in the future but what makes strong civilization of strong group so strong families of strong whatever work together is at the Rave is a compromise over to given taken and so that's the Hallmark of our nation particular net you're in our history and if our nation is continuing during and I think you're going to have to continue to have that same Spirit as soon as you have people at start stonewalling and doing their own thing you're in trouble as a country or as a nation or as a society because things start to break down I had a Chinese Professor. cause tution we looked at the Constitution we talked about why that's important know and so I want you to give me some reasons why you feel like the Bill of Rights important to the Constitution and why that's very important so you need to do that on a piece of pie since I can't really be there to have you all do that or if you want to how do you email that to me and then we can talk about that when I get back in the classroom tomorrow I just meant the delegates the Philadelphia cod fish the delegates to the Philadelphia Convention spent months drafting the Constitution when was printed in the newspapers many Americans were shocked by the radical changes proposed Laden expected the article Confederation to be amended and supporters and opponents of the new document battle over forces that threaten the shadow of the framers of the United States some people actually thought that nothing was going to happen that we can go back to the Articles and I mention our country would fall apart no that that automatic a some because it seemed like everybody was wasn't willing to compromise at some point and so people did work through those differences are too much is the net worth of it didn't work but we need to look at some of the specifics and give you the bit more background about why the Article of Confederation didn't work and why was necessary to Abby 7087 constitution Confederation yep that was the first Constitution of the United States you're probably wondering how we ended up in this predicament let's rewind a bit British and American soldiers had already been engaging in battles in the Revolutionary War since April of 1775 United States declared its independence on July 4th 1776 but in all that time one important piece of the puzzle was missing a plan for government for the new country around the time that I can reach them Independence sign in July of 1776 the question of setting up a new government is on the Forefront of everyone's Minds a committee of men led by John Dickinson was given the job of drafting a plan for government which they did but it took the Continental Congress over a year of debate discussion and Gathering inspiration from Benjamin Franklin's early Plan called The Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union before settling on a plan which they called The Articles of Confederation delegates agreed it wasn't a perfect plan the Congress adopted it on November 15th 1777 now it just needed to be approved fun fact approval by all 13 States was needed before it could be ratified and it would not be an easy or fast process delegates from 8 states ratified it on July 9th 1778 but it wasn't until Maryland finally ratified it on March 1st 1781 that the goal was achieved over three and a half years after it had been proposed the 13 states were very nervous about giving power away national government after all they were breaking away from Great Britain and the King of England who they on multiple occasions that called a tyrant and the state's weren't keen on giving any major power to a singular ruler ever again the Articles of Confederation set up a weak central government with a single Branch Congress which was mostly responsible for handling relations with other countries and declaring war as needed States kept most of the power just made them happy but ultimately caused a lot of problems for the young country before we talk about the bad news let's start with the good news in Congress each state received one making every stay equal regardless of how big their populations were Congress was given some important powers in The Articles of Confederation they could manage relations with other countries and Native American tribes issue borrow money establish the post office and maintain the Armed Forces now for the bad news in creating a weak national government the states had assured a tire couldn't rise to power but that limited power came with other problems first agreeing to new laws required agreements by nine of the 13 states and approval of changes to the Articles of Confederation itself agreements by all 13 states remember how long it took to approve the document in the first place yeah agreement between the states and magically get easier after they won their independence from Great Britain Congress had no power to enforce laws or collect taxes yep let that sink in states have the power to enforce laws passed for the national government or not the national rent was too weak to for states to carry out their laws they could only ask nicely likewise because Congress had no power to collect taxes the national government didn't have a lot of money with problem because the nation was in debt the government could ask States for money but the states were in debt to states did have the power to tax their citizens and they did some time too much the powers given to the national government were so limited it could do nothing to stop it enter Daniel Shays our friend the beginning of our story in 1786 Massachusetts a storm was brewing business owners began demanding payments for goods Farmers had bought on credit and the government began raising taxes at the same time when Farmers couldn't pay their debts they were arrested or found their Farms taken away by the government Farmers grew angry and one Daniel Shays led a rebellion that escalated on January 25th 1787 on that day 1,000 200 farmers market in Springfield Massachusetts to season Arsenal after a small Skirmish to Farmers died in 20 were wounded while the rebellion was short-lived shocked the nation because it showed the weaknesses of the national government under the Articles of Confederation something had to change if the United States government was going to survive past its early years in 1787 the 13 states sent delegates to forge a new documents the United States Constitution the very framework of the United States government today hi everyone watching don't forget to hit the the article Federation and why was it necessary to have you 1787 Convention and we still look under that same document that was trapped in 1787 there have been some amendments there's 27 amendments to the Constitution really the way you look at it came with it so in the 200-250 actually 280 plus years or country's existence it's only been a minute 17 times so that's a Hallmark of a cross through Sunday it's the longest democratic tuition in the world and of course we're an example to other nations as far as democracy and their government democracy the one drawback about democracy is that if you get people that I've come to ask and start getting into factions and not working together then that can be a problem in fact George Washington warned us when he was our first president when he left the President Warren is that a political party Canali to a lot of factions he also learned about getting into a lot of foreign entanglements with your country does today and I think our country is very heavily involved in this too because of our rise to become a world power and especially because of the result of the second world war during the 20th century you know that made our country rise to prominence but I'm my biggest fear in the future I think with what I see in our country today is the political divisions in the becoming very very sharp and if we're not careful then no like President Ronald Reagan said back in 1980s when I was in high school he only said that this country is an experiment and if we're not careful we can lose that experiment because too many people are taking loyalty to party in loyalty to their ideology and putting that above through the interest of the country and end in society as a whole and so that could be a problem to even though we are at the market if we're not careful we can do that democracy and so that's that's something by the future you guys the future and so whether or not this Republic continues is up to you even though you and your children or grandchildren and generations to come afterwards some all right let me go back to the PowerPoint sure that bet and bet that up with you and it looks like it's not put me right back course we'll be studying here very soon and events that would test that limit no we're democracy but again democracy not perfect and unfortunately we had to fight a war amongst ourselves and we'll talk about that later on when I get into that now but getting some where's the point of the new Doc in the Battle of a controversy that threaten to shut up other framers of uniting the States you lose those people that battled each other were the Federalist and Anti-Federalist and if you could we just sparkly Britain and we don't want a strong but the fellows would Prevail because a lot of people begin to realize it will hey we do need something a little bit stronger because if we don't other country would have fallen apart again we would have come under a Great Britain's control of the endswell price of what you need to do is again read Section 3 chapter 5 and then the questions on page 149 number 1 through 5 answer those questions right the question for that carry any final
