The Freedom of Expression is one of our Civil Liberties that's protected in the first amendment of the Bill of Rights.

it in guitar lesson going for today as students will come in a little bit later on let me go ahead and share the lesson with you here bring that up all right so we were looking at civil liberties this week and course we did we were in school Wednesday has been a really interesting week cuz we were out Monday for in-service day could be a parent conferences on Monday the 7th and then Tuesday November 8th was election day so we were off that day and so Wednesday is the first day that we're in the building but then the hurricane hurricane Nicole so we're doing virtual we start a virtual yesterday you should be back in the building on Monday November 14th I've been anyway when I look at civil law Reese and Leticia more about civil liberties cuz these Liberties affect us today and we have certain constitutional rights in the Bill of Rights and so it's important that we know about our rights civil liberties in the Bill of Rights in standard Saturday before we can demonstrate understanding of the rights and responsibilities associated with citizenship United States and pics of citizens and sometimes I lose can conflict with each other Expressions thoughts feelings emotions we might have and so we know that right is protected in the first amendment in the Bill of Rights in the US Constitution so very very important Amendment their civil liberty given to us by way of the Constitution going back to the eighteenth-century up to now alright civil liberties I see this powerful work today okay good it works today excellent pretty cuz it wasn't working yesterday all right so videos of the main things will there be free speech censorship petition slander libel so these are important vocabulary words that are very bored of course free speech is freedom to see know what's on her mind since it would be nice to people that try to stop you using people that stop you from see certain things because they don't like what you're saying and it could be a government could be individuals petition means that you have a right to know signs of asking for a change are wanting change slander and libel or things that people do to ruin their tarnish your reputation first 10 amendments to the Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights and that came with the Constitution and one of the incentives to put that in the Constitution the Federalist want the Constitution to be ratified the new importance of having a strong central government because it wouldn't the country would fall apart and so I like to compare it with you not talk world history for the last 6 years before the school year for the 2020 to 2003 school year so it will just bring the world his we always learn about the Holy Roman call Raymond Barr never was able to have a strong central government and So eventually it pretty much was a week was more less of like a week Alliance and ultimately fell out and so the glue that holds architect the other is a strong central federal government have certain basic rights and freedoms freedoms across civil liberties the word civil means related to Citizens Disability you having civil liberties gives citizens the power to have believes these the results will give citizens are to express themselves to others and to the government and the first man commits me the First Amendment Bill of Rights protects these five basic freedoms so sometimes in our society today we have it freedom and sometimes people can stretch that meeting to be any and everything that you want to do you know we still have to have the rule of ball they're still rules out there that govern our lives and we still need to be respectful and we have to remember to that you know one person's Freedom could infringe on the rights of others and so you know you still have to have the rule of law he swept the respect others you know they're there are limits I didn't mean just to getting everything you know there are certain limits in certain boundaries and so we have thought of those as well but we do have those five basic freedoms guaranteed in the First Amendment there it'll be a civil liberties are basic freedoms that all citizens you're watching the government protects abilities to lose give people the power to have their own beliefs and express them with our civil liberties limited you know you you're right should not harm others you know you may not tell lies about a person but you can and you woke me up to things you may not tell lies about a person you know that's life but if you do that person could sue you and you can also prove test but not right and it's understandable that we have high emotion some when certain abuses take place and if people want to protest and is nothing wrong with that but the Constitution does not protect overturning cars burning cars burning buildings looting doing all those things back Little Things I like the law because you were destroying property and stealing and then burning and so you know it's okay to protest people have emotions and then that's the wonderful thing you do on the Constitution gives us that right protest with the Constitution does not give us a ride. can burn things into a property in so and love people that do that they start to lose credibility because then do you really want freedom or you won't even talk to me can also lead to a lot of Anarchy and then you go from the tyranny of one person or one or relation to the tyranny of many and those of the opposite extremes you know we want in between where we have limited government but you want to save stable Society of course you don't want to or during government that controls everything and controls all your thoughts and all that but at the same time you don't want chaos because chaos becomes the tyranny of the many and anything that's definitely an unstable Society it's just chaotic in rioting and destruction in and there's no control some and then the last part down the boxes which part of the US Constitution protect civil liberties the Bill of Rights can protect their civil liberties the first ten amendments to the Constitution he's coming in so let me know this person in here in just a freedoms by basic freedoms in the First Amendment to the Constitution so that's what we are looking here all right so we go to next slide here so again first minute Bill of Rights we have freedom of religion freedom of speech freedom of press freedom of assembly in a freedom petitions are five basic rights listed in the fur amendment in the Bill of Rights and freedom of religion freedom of speech freedom of press freedom of assembly Freedom fish course Freedom religion means we can worship how we want and you know when I first found in 18th century most not almost the founding fathers were Christians and so they did believe in being religious you know a lot of them went to church and everything like that however they do not want one religious organization debating the government know they don't want the Catholic Church. However they did believe in the judeo-christian and that time you know you should follow does principals have a better society and in fact our Constitution and our I guess the Goodwill of human society in America is rooted in the judeo-christian ethic cancel Asbury but you have other religions to that are good ethical systems you know you have a s'long Judaism and Buddhism Hinduism and other religious faiths and then there's other adjustments to buy your Native Americans and many others. freedom of religion everyone has a right to practice religion the way they want no one can deny that right at the same time if you don't want to practice that right as well to no one can force you to not worship the taken away so that's Braswell was freedom of speech means that we can say whatever you want but of course it is limited you know whatever you say you need to make sure it's true because if you slander someone of your you see stings that person can sue you in the your freedom of speech protects truth the freedom of speech does not necessarily protect saying lies and spreading false information about people in them things to impress me publishing say what you want but again meeting with freedom of the press as newspapers magazines websites everything's like that you know you can say what you want but again you have to make sure what you're saying is accurate because again you can be sued for libel or slander if you are put out misinformation or tell lies about people who are seeking freedom of assembly know you can assemble together and you know how you want and usually people when they want to protest they assemble together freedom of petition you can petition the government t o r e v e r b other than do it verbally or the be getting signatures all those kind of things so that's very very important time of those Bill of Rights which in religion allows us to I'm going to protect the religious freedom in two ways government may not set up and or support an official religion you are free to worship as they choose freedom of speech people Express themselves Than Words music art address about being sweet without fear of being punished by the governor so person gives you the right to express others might offend others so what you say could have been someone else the first movement a lot of times of course you know there's things that someone might say or a group or organization represents that you don't like the same time the First Amendment now Cory see if that organization says something you like then you know it's your your response be if you feel like you want to respond that works then you can and it's good to have a healthy debate inside by the same time we need to have tolerance in other words sometimes you know I seen our media today where we get so emotional that we feel like we got to re another person down and at the end of the day you know you can debate but it's in your day you just got to learn to accept that people going to think differently and they're not always going to agree with you and so I think the attitude that you need to have his way we can all agree to disagree this is part of life soon Joseph free with the press the government cannot sense of the press this means that the government cannot tell the Press what they can or cannot printer produce or broadcast the Press includes books mag newspapers and magazines radio television and the internet is very important to democracy because you know it's important to have access to information you do citizens have a right to know and that sometimes it's not always an easy thing sometimes you know if you have certain military operations maybe generals don't want things to get on the media because he can compromise and a situation where the enemy can find out information and you know what that could be cause lives on the battlefield someone else is trying to come in here and give me a second so I can go back to that I let me go out when you I can assembly so you talk about important that in a democracy we have a free press but at the same time the Press has a certain responsibility differently when it comes to like the military they questioned public certain information that could compromise military operation our soldiers killed our compromise our allies and get them killed so it's important to the Press be very very responsible and depression also publish the truth to truth factual information so you want a free press and democracy bats the Press has a certain responsibility to tell the truth whatever that truth is and to be honest and open and to be fair and have a healthy debate and at the end of day depressing also say that hey you know we can agree to disagree yeah they're going to group as long as they are peaceful again riding doesn't do need to also know this Gathering to be meetings parades and protest these are all the forms of sunlight something about meetings braids as being free most humbly but yep braids of assembly that were allowed that's protected by the first amendment in the Constitution you also have the right to associate with any group that we want no one can say hey you can't associate with this group or no one can force you to associate with a crib either so so that's very very important when you do that that's very funny that we have that right to do that to make a formal request of the government a statement signed by many people using people have a petition signed love signatures or could be a simple letter from one person you know people can write their Congressman people can write their Senator going right the present president of the United States no presents not just our current president of prisons in a bath of gotten letters from people so so petition is a way to tell the government what you think so price of the Bill of Rights limits on civil liberties 1st Amendment rights given to all does not allow citizens to do and say whatever they want and so that's the thing that we have to remember again we live in a society whose rules as laws is regulations and you need to learn to be respectful I like to think of the Golden Rule Do you want to we have them do unto you treat people the way you want to be treated so that's one of the that's part of that judeo-christian ethic principal that's very important and that should lie at the heart of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights as well to you know acting you're right should not harm others are the community and in order to protect the rights of everyone that government places limits on our civil liberties citizens are expected to use their rights responsibly this means that in using their individual rights they should not interfere with the rights of others free speech give you the right to criticize public figures it does not give you the right to tell lies about them though you know when he needs to be truthful information and if you going to tell somebody something you better back it up with some facts or truth I have some evidence to back up spreading lies I heard someone's reputation is no he flies has spoken the problem is called slander if flies are printed the crime is called Bible so slander is to the verbal Bible is the printed nice and so very important and unfortunately I see him within the last few years A lot of people are in the media are spreading lies it was the one guy I can't think of his name I don't want to say nothing cuz I don't want to want to I'm not trying to attack the individual but I will attack what he's done Danny lied about the Sandy Hook shooting in Sandy Hook in Connecticut where a gunman was able to shoot his way into a school despite the fact that they lock the school he shot his way into the school and went in and shot a teacher in a bunch of kids killed them and so there's a guy who's single experiencing that's a lie despite all the evidence video evidence and all the witnesses and all that the guy might and so to me that's your response what you have to be truthful and not lie and solai and that's being accepted Norm you today and that's what scares me because that to me wonder mine Free Press just as bad as the other government trying to censor so at the same time again there has to be a balance healthy balance to Kiawah Island civil liberties what one you want to protect the rights of the community you also want to balance the rights of individuals and you also want to protect Public Safety no one has the right to say or write anything that directly leads someone to commit a crime people have the right to March and protest but not too right communities also have rights as a result of individual rights have to be balanced against the rights of the community when these are in Conflict the rights of the community must come first so I assume that we have to keep in mind when it comes to those kind of things here to use some more important words here the rights of accused and important part of democracies protecting the rights of people accused of crimes so the 4th 5th 6th and 8th Amendments protect the rights of the accused of Syracuse by crime you're arrested in I have certain rights to protect you and then that's the fourth fifth sixth and eighth minute so these amendments guarantee their right to a fair legal treatment use it as a trial trial by jury in that case I got the rights of the accused Amendment the right of people to accuse of know what that is an accusation is fifth aghoris plead the fifth you don't you have the right not to incriminate oneself no excessive bail is be charged for serious crime without a document and no one can be charged for the same crime twice and course no one can be forced to testify against me think of the fifth member they usually think of to not Double Jeopardy and also you have the right to due process of law you have to be indicted for a serious charge for the man protects many rights to protect every citizen has a right to due process of law refers to Legal steps that must be followed for the government to take away a person's life freedom property of the government can I take a person's house without paying a price for it you know sometimes the government might need to build the freeway or something is very important so the government has the power to take away property to use for the public give it pays for the property so so the 5th Minnesota lot of times we can do is protect us from nothing but it also protects her property from you know projects that the government needs so even a non-criminal things if it's been a lot of times people don't think of that commitment but that's the non-criminal he protects us all right as well too so whenever you come at 6 property you away from us they have to give us through history and maybe even answer cases certain Colonial happens as well to a cruel and unusual punishment things like pulling people apart and dragon can you do just a lot of things over bad so the question was what punishments are cruel and unusual sometimes it's still it's up to you because you know some people think that firing squad or hanging which is some good excuses that we use really part of a history log people up that was cruel and unusual punishment but you know that's still to be today so the Bill of Rights additional protections when the fountains were The Bill of Rights me when the founding fathers who wrote the Bill of Rights they remember that they were and then up to the American Revolution lot of the rights that were violated if it were violated by the British authorities they were British citizens in certain British citizen that certain rights and I felt like Great Britain out of those rights so you prevent the new American government from taking some of the same actions of the British had done to her as a result third seventh ninth and tenth amendments were also written to protect the rights of American citizens as well as being necessary for the security of a free State cuz you had to have some kind of weapons protect the state and using that was the state militia of the state think of his estate armies and the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed so but I think when that was written that wasn't this written for our day and so I don't know if our founding fathers could Envision a day where you have mass weapons of soda all over the peace and I've even seen extreme were my soul every time TV and I'm trying to sell flamethrower and so certain weapons I I'm I feel like there's a balance I am for the Second Amendment but at the same time I think we need to use common sense and regulated you know otherwise you know it does say arms really doesn't say gums what's his arms so that someone can justify well then I can have hand grenades and I can have land mines I can have flamethrowers I can have poison you know there's a lot of bad things out there and so we need to regulate weapons handguns rifles are fine the same time people need military-style weapons automatic weapons at just fine I mean hand grenades and landmines different things like that you got to believe those kind of weapons for the military no fighting or our nation's battles defend our country but ordinary citizens own handguns are okay hunting rifles okay love you like you a lot of hunting and things like that and so that's fine and we'll use of weapons ports defend themselves to it through someone's trash breaking their house from Rob and steal and that's where the thing at the same time we need to have regulations and I and I don't like I don't like people and try to shut down to be I don't like either extreme the constitutional right to bear arms and so they people that want to just get rid of guns that's not realistic you know that's the one extreme to The Other Extreme is just sell whatever or no kind of background checks to sell whatever and to me that's dangerous plus to some people that extreme they say oh well keep hands out a gun hands of criminals will the way you do that is a background checks why is it that we have to have a license to drive a car but any nearby can only gun and a guns more deadly in the car so guns can be regulated now they're up there could be a healthy balance between the two Third Amendment no Soldier shall in time of peace be quartered in any house or is it British did that and so that's never had places were told to stay and when soldiers are on duty they just go to their own so that's never been a problem since our country has gone there to pass laws controlling sale and Licensing of guns and then that's an and I license permits to own guns in it I think that's good just like you have to have a license to drive a car you know you should have to have a license why because a license that you had some kind of training just like when you have a driver license you have to have some kind of training to drive can you magically just don't let everybody just dry Whatever and ever have any kind of training would be chaos same with guns and unfortunately too many guns too many people are trying to make a butt and so to anybody's people that make a box unfortunately it's at the expense of a people because a lot of people using guns for violence and so I think the solution is to continue to have you know when I was growing up and over the years over the decades there was a lot of chicken back in the 1980s nice Dilaudid gun buyback programs I'm sure maybe some place in the country still have those I think you should continue to do those kind of programs get those kind of guns off the street and get the guns out of the hands of criminals and I have license background checks don't give guns to people who are mentally ill people who are unstable people have anger management issues those kind of people should not have guns and so we're we got to do a better job this kind of thing so you can bear you know we have right to bear arms it's fine but at the same time yet that common sense and make sure that's how we do that to her too soldiers may not move into people's homes without permission this was important early American history they were forced to house and beat Bridge so it again since our country has been in the bed you know you have military bases where people would stay in Canada and then when soldiers when they were on leave or when they went home they just stayed home that went back to their family so that's never been an issue since we've been in the nation there to 7th amendment that says that where are be construed or denied and then of course the 10th Amendment says any power is not expressly written in the Constitution are reserved for the set a reserved for the people okay so I can submit my deals with the rights of people involved in lawsuits or civil cases civil cases when you holding someone responsible for libel or slander or some other things so again usually so case about disagreements between people and not crimes in civil cases are tried and courts she's a right to a trial by jury in most of these cases as well so you have a lot of civil cases out there A lot of times to their civil cases in a car accident and it's the other person's fault and maybe they have insurance he might take him to court to try to I've been so lost several pieces out there as well to Ninth Amendment people's rights are not limited to what is in the Bill of Rights do people retain or hold on to other rights as well the government may not deny those rights just because they are not spelled out in the Constitution can you tell me about any powers not given to the federal government belong to the states or to the people this meant that this is meant to keep the present in the Congress from becoming too strong and the gum United States can have only the power that the people give it and so and then that that the people gave it to the Constitution and so it's limited there to okay and of course civil liberties are necessary because again African-American seven slaves have been property and the Bill of Rights and was meant to protect citizens from the power of the federal government state laws affect people's rights after the Civil War States passed laws that denied his rights as a women and African-Americans but women couldn't vote. That was a national thing that wasn't just States as well too and so the Civil War amendments were necessary to add because blacks were considered property and not citizens so so 1719 23rd 24th and 26th amendments these amendments really gave voter rights to other 17 members gave African-Americans the right to vote so it's sort of poetic justice and ironic that black males who had been slaves and property got the boat got the right to vote for white women did was the 19th amendment allowed for women gave women the right to vote and then later movements extending voting rights for real age limit of Rage eventually voting right age was lowered to 18 used to be 21 but was lowered to 18 because during the Vietnam era lot of people fought in soda felt like a if we can find a country than we should be able to go as well to get in some more minutes like it was legal to Southern States enslaved Africans that almost no rights at all and World between his property so that's why you need the 13 14 and 15 amendments to abolish slavery to give citizenship and to give the suffrage and so that's what the Thirteenth Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendment to the power of the federal government to create a conduit to honor of the rights of Americans get 13-minute made slavery and those slavery was against the law in any state still could not give African Americans basic rights particular in the South or the north at the time of Independence in North pretty much got rid of slavery didn't even ask cuz their economy is forget smaller forms folder properties even have large plantations and so you know there really wasn't even a lot of slave labor and so it's fairly easy for the north to get rid of the South they need that labor to work those cash crops on the plaintiff large plantations in in Virginia in North Carolina and South Carolina in Georgia in Maryland Lulu's at Southern States there a Fourteenth Amendment protecting the rights of the newly freed slaves and struck down Black Codes keep them citizenship soil people that were born in Ashley Estates with citizens and that's that that same freezes meant to cover pretty much everybody from then on cuz let's say someone is visiting this country for foreign country as long as our child was born in this country that child is a citizen okay and so I took 14 minute also gave all the laws and guaranteed due process so 15th amendment was passed to this right of suffrage to African-Americans and so now I have to marry each other very poor women couldn't vote yet black women couldn't could 19th Amendment to change that and state laws still kept women from voting and most elections however Constitution was amended several more times than 1900 some of them at 6:10 to the right to vote others change the way the elections were carried out the other direction election of senators you know used to be the state's houses between change and I'll put direction directions to give me the 17th at 7 p.m. for direct election of senators and before that 17th Amendment senators were chosen by the state assemblies to the 50 states June 19th to 23rd at midnight smooth get women the right to 23rd Amendment gave people that people living in Washington d.c. allowed them to vote for the president vice president for they couldn't simply because they were considered the District of Columbia Washington DC is not a state it's a federal.
