Congratulations to Candace Reilley! - Candace Reilley, a phenomenal senior/ Dual Enrollment student at Ridgeland Hardeeville High School, contested at the state level for the American Legion Oratorical Contest in Columbia, SC on Saturday, March 12, 2022. She had the opportunity to compete for up to $7,500 in scholarship funds. Candace was sponsored by American Legion Post #95 Jasper. We are proud to announce that Candace Reilley received 2nd place at the state level contest and was awarded $1,500 in scholarship funds and $100 from Mr. Jim Defrehn, Post #95 Commander. In addition to this, Candace received a 1st Runner Up Certificate of Distinction from the American Legion Department of South Carolina.

hello my name is Candace Riley and I will be doing my speech on the 19th Amendment now that we have celebrated the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th I meant into the Constitution we must remember those who came before us and their contributions for the freedom of women to vote Susan B Anthony Frances Willard Lawrence Kelly Alice Paul and Helen Keller and Mr Harry Thomas burn to name but a few the 19th Amendment states quote the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or Abridged by the United States or by any state on account and quote 100 years before the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment the Wheels of Change were slowly rolling across the United States in 1820 Susan B Anthony was born at the age of 17 she was busy gathering signatures and a movement that helps to end slavery Susan B Anthony spent her life fighting for the rights and freedoms of human beings and when she was 52 years old she was arrested for voting she was ahead of her time and a pivotal voice in the women's suffrage movement fighting for the rights of people regardless of color or although she was both deaf and blind Helen Keller could still hear the cries of women as I spoke out against a cruel and stubborn government who wanted to keep women captive in their roles as lesser beings by some of their male counterparts he was born into the cruelty of slavery and clawed his way to Freedom more than 60 years apart Frederick Douglass and Helen Keller survive the cruelties of both nature and man to maintain the selflessness to incorporate both their passions and they're paying for the betterment of humanity not only Frederick Douglass fight against the Injustice of slavery for the freedom of his fellow brothers and sisters but he also fought for the freedom of women bound by gender roles in society he said and I quote a woman knows and feels her wrongs man cannot know and feel them and she also knows as well as he can know what measures are needed to redress them I grant all the claims at this point she is her own best representative we can either speak for her vote for her nor ask for her nor be responsible for her and the thing for men to do when the premise is just to get out of her way and give her the fullest opportunity to exercise all the powers inherent in her individual purse Melody and allow her to do it as she herself shall elect to exercise them her right to be and to do is as full complete and perfect as the right of any man on earth I say of her as I of the colored people give her a fair play and hands off and quote Joseph Frederick Douglass raised his voice against the Injustice of slavery he and Helen Keller also used their voices and celebrity for this right cause she exercised constitutional rights under the Constitution as she marched down Pennsylvania Avenue arm and arm among eight thousand women as Adam and their Liberation amongst the Sea of men a women's equality as of their right to vote so that they could have the power to change laws it was in the wee hours of morning when the last state Tennessee was casting its votes much like today when two parties disagree it was a lively time of discourse and disagreement those politicians opposing the right of women to vote demonstrated their positions by wearing a bright red rose while their constituents just dialed a vibrant yellow rose in support of women's rights known as The War of the Roses it came down to a tiebreaker when the Red Rose wearing twenty-three-year-old Harry Thomas burn in hired by his dear Mother went against his party and change the course of women's history to this very day with his famous boat the amendment was ratified the lives of women have changed substantially over the course of time and when the amendment was ratified on August 18th 1920 it set off a firestorm of change and the era would become known as The Roaring Twenties it was the bird the American flapper young women in bold and by their right to vote began to embrace a new sense of self-respect and confidence they ventured out into a whole new world of self-discovery Coco Chanel took women's fashion whole new level of bold and audacious the Exotic Josephine Baker made magic and jazz music The Dramatic Gloria Swanson swooned on the Silver Screen as women began to take charge of their own lives the women were well on their way to a better social standing they still had a long way to go to establish themselves as truly equal members of society it would still be many years before women would begin to realize actual opportunities concerning education Fair wages employment and overall equal rights after the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment on August 18th 1920 many female activists continue to use their Newfound power in politics to reform Society the National American woman's suffrage association became the League of Women Voters then in 1923 the national women's party proposed Equal Rights Amendment the ER we should ban discrimination based on in a recent article from the Bureau of Labor Statistics quote on an average day 15% of men report doing housework like laundry cleaning and other tasks as compared to 49% of women and quote a statistic from caregiver Action Network states that quote 66% of Family Care where's our women and quote as we celebrate more than 100 years since the ratification of the 19th Amendment we can see now that the women's party has indeed accomplished a great deal as compared to the egregious unfair conditions women lived in because laws were made relegating them too near slave-like status and their own homes May the cause of Justice always touch our hearts may we see ourselves in the problem as well as a solution may we hear the call to action and respond May the smell of Victory always be near and the taste of Victory always be sweet with all our Sense and Sensibility is it intact it is easy to see a just and Prudence aside we're men and women respect themselves as much as each other but the truth is that without the right to vote these conditions would have remained the same because laws only change when you have the right to vote thanks
